AoE | area of effect the radius of damage from an attack, e.g. a bullet can hit one man but a grenade can hit many men within a certain radius |
CG | computer graphics |
D&D | Dungeons and Dragons a famous RPG game traditionally played with pen, paper, and dice |
DPS | damage per second the average rate of damage inflicted over time, e.g. a certain sword may inflict 15 damage points every hit and you can swing it every 0.5 seconds, so you can use DPS to compare the sword to a stronger but slower weapon |
DS | Nintendo DS the Nintendo handheld portable that came after the Gameboy Advance |
FPS | first-person shooter |
GUI | graphic user interface |
MMO or MMOG | massively multiplayer online game |
NPC | non-player character a character controlled by the video game, not by another human |
PS2 or PS3 | PlayStation 2 or 3 |
PSP | PlayStation Portable Sony's handheld game console, in the same generation as the Nintendo DS |
PvP | player verses player games where players compete against each other, such as FPS or RTS; also known as player killing in MMORPGs |
RPG | role-playing game |

Naming Conventions
Oof, I decided I didn't like the name "Gwen" for myself because poor K only gets one initial, so it just sounds better if I match him. From henceforth, I shall sign off by the pen name "A"! So that this post won't be utterly boring, I've also made a collection of top gaming acronyms (excluding game titles) that should help all you newbies out there. Feel free to comment with some more and I'll add them to the list:

oh, i'm so glad i came across your blog! my hubby's a gamer and i'm a newbie. i'm really getting into playing and i'm seeing that it's a whole new f-ing world! hehe! this post is especially helpful to me since i don't know the lingo yet. i'll be following :)
